- Full Text
Myrtle Holloway, 14 years old, 330 Oxford road, Kenilworth, and John Edson McEldowney, 19 of 620 Abbotsford road, Kenilworth, died as a result of injuries received when the automobile in which they were riding crashed through lowered gates at the Winnetka avenue crossing the Chicago and North Western railway in Winnetka and was struck by a northbound express and milk train at 12:25 o'clock Tuesday morning. McEldowney died a few minutes after the accident and Miss Holloway died at the Evanston Hospital about an hour later.
The car in which they were riding was driven by James Goetz, 19, of 989 Cherry street, Winnetka. Goetz is in the Evanston hospital with serious scalp wounds and a possible skull fracture.
According to the police report of the accident, the small roadster in which the young couple were riding was eastbound when the crash occurred. The driver apparently failed to see the lowered gates and either to see or hear the approaching train. The south gate on the west side of the tracks was broken. The engine of the 11-car train struck the right rear wheel of the roadster, which was demolished.
All of the young people in the car were either students or former students at New Trier High School. Miss Holloway transferred from New Trier to the Frances Shimer school, Mt. Carroll, Ill., at the beginning of this semester. McEldowney was a junior at the high school. Goetz also a New Trier student, is a senior.
Funeral services for Miss Holloway are being held this afternoon (Thursday) at 2 o'clock at the Church of the Holy Comforter in Kenilworth. Burial will be at Memorial Park cemetery. Miss Holloway is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George E. Holloway, and by a sister, Helen M. Holloway.
His parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. McEldowney, and three sisters survive the McEldowney boy. The sisters are Mrs. Laurence Meyering of Highland Park, Mrs. John G. Wittbold of Winnetka and Mrs. John M. Brushingham of Milwaukee. The funeral services were held this morning (Thursday) at the Graceland cemetery chapel.- Featured Link
