James G. Johnston, father of Robert M. and Garrett F. Johnston of Wilmette, died Tuesday morning, July 9, after an illness of three weeks.
Mr. Johnston was born in Lanark, Scotland, in 1851, and came to the United States when he was nineteen years old. He taught school at Three Rivers, Mich., shortly after coming to this country, and later entered the University of Wisconsin, graduating from that institution with the class of 1880.
Soon after his graduation from the university Mr. Johnston went to the copper country of northern Michigan as superintendent of the Quincy Mine school near Hancock, Mich. He held that position for thirty-nine years until his retirement in 1922. For the past few years Mr. Johnston had lived in Evanston and at 2047 Howard street, Chicago.
He was a member of Quincy lodge, A. F. and A. M. at Hancock, Mich., and a member of the Hancock Congregational church, which he served as deacon for many years.
Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Bessie Fox Johnston; one daughter, Ruth, a teacher in the Lane Technical High school, Chicago; and three sons, Robert M. and Garrett F., of Wilmette, and James G., of Evanston. The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, July 11, at the Memorial Park cemetery chapel with the Rev. Clyde O. Wheeland, of the Wilmette Presbyterian church officiating.- Featured Link
