Mr. ] ohnston \\'a s born in Lanark, Scot land. in 1851. and came to the United States when he was nineteen \·ear s o ld . He taught sch ool at Three Itivers. Mich .. shortly after coming to this country, and later entered the Un iversitv of \ Vi cousin. graduating from that i"nstitution with the class of 1880. Soon after hi s graduation from the univer. s it y Mr. J ohn st on \Yent t o the copper co untry of northern Michigan as sup eri nt endent of th e Quincy Mine school near Hancock. 1'lich. He was a member of Quincy lo dge, A. F. and A. M. at Hancock, Mich., a nd a m ember of th e Hancock Congregational ch ur ch. which he scned as deacon for man y years.
