Gorgeous Amaryllis Plant Sure to Grow The old-time Johnson amaryllis was. a favorite bouse plant for generations, its clusters of big velvetyv crimson trumpets beîng a sure-fire winter at- traction. We niow have amaryllis of tis type, double the s ize of the old Amaryllis Johnsoni and in a great variety of colors f rom White through pinks to scarlet and deep crimson and some Witb bandsomne stripes. Tbese new bybrids are certain bloomers. Al they need is to be planted and set in the window and tbey will send up their stout stems crowned witb a cluster of huge blooms. Tbe bulbs are large and need a large pot of at least 7-inch' size, the bulb beinLg overed so tbat the neck protrudes from the soil.. \Vbe n potted set tbemn in a sunny window anid water justto moisten the soîl until tbe bud starts ptîshing out of tbe bulb. In order to get long stems, some growers keeptheni in the dark until the stem is four or five incbes tail before briniging inito ful ligbt. After flowering tbe leaves, whîch are long, broad and dark green, develop and are ornamental. They sbould be kept in growth after flow- ering and given plenty of moisture until tbe following July or August, wben tbey sbould.be given a resting period, letting tbemn become dry. In tbe.fall they will start new groWth and will devel op their stems -in winter again. It is no trouble at, ail to have fine amaryllis blooms in, the ordinary living room. .Tbe old Johnsoni is still one of the fine ones and can be bad at aIl deal- ers. Another. old-titnrr of sborter ,gro .wtb botb as to flower stem and f oliage is. Amaryllis Equestre, an orange scarlet, one of the most gen- erous oik the whole amaryllis Iist iin hlooming, often throwing up two or three stems., Plant a few amaryllis LIBERKTYI LOAN AutoI CORPORATrION Personat Tel. The so-called magic lily tbat often. astonishes tbose not familiar witb it by shooting up a talstem ini late sum- mer crowned with pink Mies is also an amaryllis and a hardy bulb to be planted now. This is Amaryllis Halli and also known as Lycoris squami- gera. It makes. its f oliage in spring and then dies down and ýdisappear s. In August and early Septeniber, the flôwer stem appears suddenly from the bare ground, grows rapidly and unfolds- its handsome liles. Tbe crown of the bulb "should be about four inches below the surface of tbe soil and it should be given a good tnulch the first season. It is perfectly hardy and neyer fails to attract admir- ation and astonishment.
