Each, entry was i udged -sole- ly upon how well it was donc and flot, upon its size. The contest started last March and closed August 31. It was open to everyone in Chicago and suburbs and ~ attracted many entries. WVith, so muéh public in- te rest centered at this time on the modernization pro- gram of the Federal Hous- ing administration, it is in- tercsting to know what a transformation Mr. and Mms. Green effected for the conm- para tively smiall amount of nioney expended. Tbey t omre out the old porch and turned the f ront section into a vestibule with Colonial entrance. A new sun-room porch, with French doors lcading into the dining room, was built at the rear of the house. The south side porch was modernized and screcned-in. The living room was emodled, window loca- tions changcd and fireplace and book-cases built in. The e n t ire kitchen and pantry was emade, the lat- ter being tomn out. and re- p 1 a c e d with an attractive breakfast nook. The lost pantmy space was- regainied by stomage cupboards on the wall. The entire bouse was re- dccorated. -A Tennessee red cedar closet was built UP- stairs and the bedrooms were increascd in size by making thcm a Colonial type. The itemized cost shows: Lumber, millwork insula- tion, roofing for porches, paint, hardware and other materials, $700.15. Carpenter and labor, $30.60; masonry labor, $60; total cost $1,- 064.75.
