August 30, 1934 WILMRTTH LIF~ il Beauty ,of Yacht Cornes to Traicù End Bel ore iDawn 'A sloop that dared to poke its grace;- fui nose out beyond the. breakwater at Wilmette harbor at '3 o'cIock last Thursday. morning Was smashed against concrete and rocks by the re- lentless' waves and steady swell of Lake Michigan. Theé members of the crew were able to wade to safety without having suffered any serious iury. Scarcely bad the venturesomfe yacht gotten beyond the mouth of the bar- bor than the waves and swell hurled the craft back against the rocks along the breakwater. This was the point at which. the Coast.Guard station at Wiimette, di- rected.by Capt. M. A. Jacobson, came into the drama while the, steadily pounding waves furnished the sound effects. Responding proniptly to the alarm, the station sent out six men to the aid of the distressed craft and crew. Making sure that the crew was safe, the coast guards ivent to work- and it was three hours before they pulled the yacht free of the break- ivater and back into the harbor. At first tbey tried to tow the sloop f rom the rocks with the Coast Guard motor surf boat. That failing, the coast -guards rigged up a block and tackle, then succeeded in pullinq the yachlt free, but it sank immediately whlen the water poured into its gapin'- starboard side. The weigbt in the keelý contributed its share to the sinking. So the formerly beautiful sloop, which had suddenly become a sun- ken wreck. ivas hauled back into the harbor.* Later that day, the coast gzuards lifted the wreck from the waters with a derrick at a point nlear the station.
