Augu~t 9, 1934 WIIMPTTP I IF~ Safety Lane Check on, Car, Urgent, Need Stressing the fact that three out of every four cars operating on -the streets today are defective and are thus dangerous and potential accident causers, F. M. Kreml, director of the Bureau of Accident Prevention of the Evanston police departmnent, is urging ail drivers to put their cars through t b, free Safety Lane tests being condicted from, August 6 to 1l on 0 ington avenue, between University klace and Clark street, Evanston. "A car with insufficient brakes, inadequate lights or some simfilar defect is a great bazard upon the streets," stated Mr. Kreml.' 'Particu- larly witb the great increase in automobile accidents in recent morq.1,s is if important that every driver niake sure that bis or ber car is in safe opera ting condition. National statistics show a large proporticue ,of accidents to be directly attributable f0 defective equipment on cars." According to standards based upon tests by the Society of Automotive Engineers, a car traveling at 30 miles per bour with four wheel brakes should stop in 47 feet. A car with brakes which require 70 feet to stop at this speed is obviously dangerous. Particularly with the prevalent higb speeds and traffic congestion of today is if important that cars be able to stop quickly in an emergency. This and ýother safety factors of the car are ail checked competently by the Safefy Lane inspectors. .41t is only by a realization by every miotorist of the danger of running a defective car. that this important cause of accidents can be eliminated," said Kreml, "and Safety lane offers an excellent opportunity for drivers to llnd out the condition of their cars and show their sincere -interest in promoting traffic safety."
