The Rev. Thomas J. Powers, retired teacher, died Dec. 13 at Loyola Academy in Wilmette. Fr. Powers, who celebrated his golden jubilee as a Jesuit in 1952, had taught math at the academy for 19 years until his retirement in 1967. Before coming to Loyola, he was principal of the University of Detroit High School, Detroit, from 1934 to 1942. Previously, he taught at St. Louis University High School, and was assistant principal there from 1926 to 1928. Other teaching assignments included St. Xavier High School of Cincinnati and St. Ignatius High School of Cleveland. He also was co-author of two Latin textbooks. He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Carnelia Geaslen of Covington, Ky.; and a nephew, Thomas W. Powers of Cincinnati. The new rite of Christian burial was celebrated for Fr. Powers Dec. 15 in the chapel of Loyola Academy. The homily was delivered by the Rev. James Mertz of Loyola University. Interment was in All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines.
