L I F-E ~~~rua~r 21, 1930 Feature Three Soloists ·in People's Orchestra Concert Three soloists were on the program of the Chicago People's orchestra last Sunday afternoon at the Eighth street theater. Mae Willems, soprano, sang the aria, Elsa's Dream, . from 11 Lohengrin"; Virginia. Knapp, pianist, played the three movements of £chumann's Concerto for piano, A Minor, Op. 54; and. Alice Guernsey, youthful violinist, played "Havanaise" by Saint-Saens. All three numbers are particularly popular for their beauty of melody and· theme. Miss \Villems sang the aria faultlessly " in a clear voice which possessed a wide range. Miss Knapp displayed good technique, and a clear understanding of just how Schumann's concerto should be played. Miss Guernsey showed great promise, although her tone was not strong. The orchestra which was rather in good form chO$C to play Weber's Overture, "Der Freischutz," and also his "Invitation to the Dance," Tschaikowsky's Symphony, No. 6, B Minor, "Pathetique," and "Triumphant Entry of the Boyards," a march by Halvorsen. The orchestra has improved considerably. since last season, and is gradually becoming more popular, as was proved by the targe attendance · tast Sunday.
