Respectfully yours, John ]. Peters, Justice of the Peace and member of the Board of Auditors ' New Trier township. ljl9 'vVashington avenue, \Vilmette. January 15, 1930 Editor, Wu.M~TT~ LIPE: I attended a New Trier township tax-payers' meeting recently given under the auspices of the Wilmette Chamher of Commerce in the Howard school and was greatly pleased with the enthusiastic criticism of the way in which the re-assessment matter has been handled. In the first place, Mr. George Harbaugh, local assessor, revealed the fact · that the assessment was not made in acordance with the - State law, which requires that the men !Jlaking the assessments work under the local supervisor and that they must be registered voters in the township~ Mr. Harbaugh stated that only three of the men were so qualified and that more than thirty of them were from Chicago. Mr. Orner brought up the fact that these men spend a good portion of their time congregating in the railroad station. I believe that inasmuch as the State law was not followed out that the citizens are justified in demanding that the work be done in accordance with the law. Another thing of interest was brought up at this meeting, and that was the apparent successful operation of the Municipal Lighting plant in Winnetka. I believe that this is a platform that your paper could endorse for Wilmette. I hope you will be liberal in your denunciation of the tax situation in New Trier township. Very truly yours, R. M. Kirtland 420 Washington ave., Wilmette Editor, \:VILM~TTE LIP~: I was very much interested in a letter from Mr. Hughston M. McBain of Kenilworth in reference to the tax meeting held recently at Wilmette. I fully concur in the remarks that he makes in that letter and wish to add my deep feeling of regret that the citizens of the north shore towns, largely through lack of proper information, seem to be playing into the hands of the old gang that has for many years in Cook county been robbing the people through the archaic system of taxation which has produced thousands of grafters, and has caused the small real estate owner in many, many instances to pay much more of a tax than should justly have been assessed. Having paid taxes for many years, both in Chicago and in the suburbs of Winnetka and Glencoe, I feel that the citizens of the north shore toV\'ns should not hinder the proper develop- Daily Times Conducts Some Attractive Prize Contests Chicago's picture newspaper, the Daily Times, has introduced the novel radio idea in connection with its latest comic strip, which runs under the title of "Sammy Squirt."
