A Christm. as Story Entering a street car a few days before Christmas I took a seat beside a little boy who was busily pasting bright colored seals in a most haphazard fashion on a small packed wrapped in white tissue paper. " I'm decorating my mother's Christmas present," he said. "It's very pretty," I answered. "How are you going to keep her from seeing it when you reach horne?" "Oh, I'm going to give it to her right away-you see, i~'s for the house." "Don't you thmk she'd rather have it on Christmas day- for a surprise?" · "No, I think she'd rather have it now. It's a pair of salt cellars, and the ones we have aren't very good-they are old ones. When the Wilmette fire fighters arrived on the scene the pipe organ had already dropped to the basement and the flames were eating their way t!)wards the front of the building. Rumors that the water supply was insufficient were false, Fire Chief Zibble states. Five engine streams poured 0n to th~ blaze steadily for three hours. Loss from the fire is expected to run between $50,000 and $60,000, a large part of which is covered by insurance. it was the worst fire Wilmette has experienced since seven business buildings on East Railroad avenue we··e destroyed here seven years ago. Miss Betty Shapker 823 Central avenue . served coffee to' the fire fighters while the fire was in progress. The board of trustees of the Wilmette Presbyterian church passed re solutions of gratitude which were for\varded to Fire Chief Zibhle of Witmette, Fire Chief G. M. Houran, of Winnetka and Fire Marshal A. N. Hofstetter of Evanston, for the splendid work of their departments in battling the blaze under the adverse weath . .~ r conditions. The Rev . Clyde Randolph Wheeland, pastor of the church, was particularly grateful to the firemen for saving hi s library collection and re search work which were housed in the church.
