SAFETY WEEK EVANSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT ARE TESTING BRAKES OUR BRAKE CERTIFICATE PRESENTED TO THE OFFICER WILL AVOID DELAY Chicago Automobile Toil Reduced in Seven Months Traffic fatalities in . Chicago during the ftrst seven months of this year were reduced 20.4 per ct·nt as compared with the same period last year. The deaths in that period this year totaled 387; the number killed in that period last year was 469. Those statistic. were secured bv the Chicago Motor Club from the Chicago police department. Charles M. Hayes of \Vinne.tka. president of the club, declared that he believed the drastic reductiori to be the result of intensive safet:v. education which has been iL process for some time. "Such agencies as safety education in the schools; stories and editorials in the press; the school boys' safety patrol and the fact that the entire citizenry is realizing that one of the crying needs of the day is courtesy on the streets and highways and respect for motor vehicle laws are reflected in the number of casualties this year," ~fr. Haves said. "Stancling by themselves, the ftgures for this year arc still shockingly high. It is only when we compare them with those of last year, and consider the va&tly increased number of motor vehicles on the streets and -the increase in population that they seem low. The reduction is sufficient, how~ver, to i1:dicate that the entire public IS becommg conscious that careful driving and walking are imperative at all times."
