"La Campana Sommersa" was among the nu,·elties which Louis Eck stein announced when the Ravinia prospectus \\·as published last spring, and the RaYinia sce nic stndiu immediately began the ta sk of buildin.C! the elaborate setting · required by the libretto. The operatic version -which Respighi has so effecti\·e h · set to mu sil', has an Italian libretto, -but the nwstic ism nf Hauptman's German \\·ork has be e n carefullv retained, the mu ·ical . etting serving to heighten the beauti es \\'hich were manifested in the original. 1t is thoroughlv modern in its treat ment and ma v he rega.r ded as the late st and most potent example of ultraIlhldernism a s it is being set forth bv the present day composers ·of the Italian school. Mme. Rethberg is to he heard as Rautendelein, who as · the heroine of this Teutonic story which is peopled \Vith elves ' and ·g nomes and fauns, is nartlv of earth and partly of elfland. Her grandmother is an old woman of the mountains who although human, is in close contact with all the mythical ·Powers of Nature, and hence Rautendelein is gifted with supernatural powers while at the same time she is capable of human emotions. Rautendclein is beloved by Nickelman, the · spirit of water. . Martinelli as Heinrich Heinrich-the character interpret.:d 1)\· Mr. Martinelli-is a bell-caster ·w ho has become the victim of the gnomes.. and who has seen his masterpiece, the hell whose silver tones \\ere to resound from the spire of the church on the hillside, sunk beneath the waters of . the lake. Rautendelcin knows that this is the work of the Faun. and as she loves Heinrich, she is overcome with a longing for the land of men. Heinrich. distraught at his ill fortune. is carried to his home and Rautendelein resolves to save him. acting against the wishes I old neighbors hearing of his ungodly phy.
