june 7, 1929 w ·ILMETTE LIFE Color Number Added · To Others on Cars of G·raham-Paige Besides the regular chassis number and engine number that every automobile must have, Graham:. Paige· models now reach their owners with a· third -set of numerals that eliminate what has always been a frequent source ::>f confusion among owners, service stations, and factories. A "color number," .stamped in a metal plate permanently affixed to each body, combit;ed \1\·ith a system of record-keeping at the Graham-Paige factory, guarantees correct color matching of any unit of a body w~enever a replacement is ordered, wtt4out chance of error, no matter how old the car may be when the need for body work arises. The new system, originated by Gra~m-Paige body engineers, so es a problem that has become more and more acute with the trend toward a wide variety in body colors. Current production at" Graham-Paige requires thirty-three color combination·~ for the standard cars alone. Special color schemes, in variations of standard colors, or in totally different colors, add hundreds of other combinations everv month. The average owner may have a fairlv good idea of the color of his car, but he h.a s no conception of the many di.fferent names for the same color ·supplied by different manufacturers of paint and lacquer. It has alw~ys been extremely difficult, therefore, to obtain the exact information necessary to match correctly any color, when a wheel or fender or door is ordered. The Graham-Paige system of color numbering not only ends all chance· of error, but greatly facilitates the practice of ord~ring. It is no longer neces·.sary to quote the chassis number, .to name the color desired, or to describe how a particular replacement unit is striped. This applies even to cars turned out in special color combinations. For instance, should the O\\'ner of a special "paint job" desire a vermilion wheel for a '3ilver gray sedan, he nerd only quote color number 29-33-11. He need not even mention whether the ·!=ar is a six or an eight, sedan or coupe, for each number carries the full information on the factory record. Employment Situation in Auto Plants Is Good The general industrial employment sit~ation existing throughout the ~nited ?tates in the last thirty days ts descnbed as fairly satisfactory in the monthly report of' the Department of Labor. !he ~igh level ~£ employment maintamed 111 March in the automotive and allied industries was continued last month.
