Monday, the childrc·n of the garden clubs that Mrs. Ewer starte d in the two schools, the Central and the Ho\vard, visited Mr3. Hurlbut's garden and were much interested in her wild f!owersl a'5 well as in a pair of fritn~ly wrens that are building their home in a bird house in the g-arden. The wrens sa t at IJj)po~ite ends of the low arch over the walk and talked to one another and tc us, this morning, as though they were accus tomed t o receiving guests in Mrs. Hurlbut's garden. A humming bird darted in and out among the flow ers above the pool and ht!, too, see med quite at home. \\' e noticed this was true of all the bird s that came, and they were many, . in . the half ho4f that we were there. · As almost evetjyone in Wilmette who cares for flowe-rs , makes a pilgrimage t o this garden once a year, at lea'5 t, it is not strange that the birds are used to visitors. All the other gardens we have seen this spring; are forgot ten when we see thi s one. This year Mr3. Hurlbut has u sed brighter colors or so it seems. · There is a red , white, and blue garden near the front walk and much more color in general in th e ·front than ht.nerly. But it is in the garden at the side and back of the house where colcr runs riot. \Vhen the tulips go, much of tl1e brightest coloring in her garden will be gone. If you have no flowers planted and want flowers this summer, you can l>uy anuuals by the dozen, good strong plants for a small ·.;\un. Zinnias, -cosmos, asters, calendulas, marigolds, and the like are easily transplanted. In a short time after planting yo u will have plenty of fl owers for cutting.
