May 10, 1929 The band of Au·.;tralian boys who recently visited the north shore should know something about rapid-fire automobile production when they return home. The Anzacs after their visit to Wilmette, Winnetka and other of our suburbs called on Henry Ford, at the River Rouge plant. Ford welcomed the visitors and then to make them more pleased he signed his name in the autograph books of nearly every one of the 158 vr.;itors. These 158 boys, members of th~ Young Australian League, under the leadership of Major ]. ]. Simons, came from alJ parts of Australia and are making a 35,000-mile trip, which started in · December and will end sometime in July. They visited several of . the motor car manufacturing plants and the General Motors proving ground.;. One of the boys, Clyde Slocum of Perth, said that all Australians were deeply interested in motor cars. but he did not believe that Americans were in the habit of driving such great distances by motor as his home folks. He remarked that he frequently drove 190 mile.; to attend dances and the theater. and this was the custom of many in that country who live in the outlands. Friendly Advice o motorist would think of clutterN ing up his front lawn with empty cans, wrapping paper and bits of garbage, yet that is exactly what some car owners do when they visit camping or picnic grounds, it is pointed out by the Chicago Motor club. As the touring season opens, it would be well for all motorists to remember that if they would place therefuse after a picnic in the receptacles that are usually to be found for that purpose, the grounds would appear far more inviting to the next car owner that arrives. Leaving trash in the open is a sign of thoughtlessness and discourtesy. Picnickers who are imbued with a sense of the fitness of things and the rights of others will see to it that the ground they have occupied is clean before they leave.
