20 WILMETTE LIFE May 10, 1929 For CJY/other -)' RECOUNT HISTORY OF ANNUAL POPPY DAYS Memorial Flower Now Recognized by 'france, England, Canada, and United States The first person in America to . wear the poppy in memory of those who died in the Great War, from all information obtainable, was Miss Moina 'Michael of Athens, Ga. It was on the morning of November 9, 1918, while she was serving on the staff of the Y. M. C. A. Overseas headquarters at Hamilton Hall, Columbia university, New York, that a soldier placed in her hands a copy of the Ladies Home Journal containing John McCrae's poem, "We Shall Not Sleep." Touched by the words of this poem ~Iiss Michael decided to wear a poppy in honor of the war dead. This was the beginning of the custom of wearing poppies · in memory of the men, who lost their lives during the World war. The poppy is now the Memorial flower of the French, British, and Canadian people, as well as the American. In America the women have taken Miss Michael's idea and developed it into a great program for welfare relief for service men and women and their families. Early in the winter work was begun in the government hospitals and convalescent workshops by disabled veterans. Idle hands were given employment shaping the red flowers which the people of America will wear on their coats Poppy Day. Though the veteran-made poppy is not made of silk, but of red crepe paper, and perhaps a little crude in appearance when compared to the commercial poppy, the public should take more pride in wearing it. For the families of these men-the poppy makers are all men who receive little or no government compensation -the money earned often means food, shelter, and fuel. If a man is too badly disabled to make a complete poppy he may team with a buqdy in shaping the flowers. All monev derived from the sale of poppies goe-s for relief work, not a cent going to administration expenses or salaries. The Legion Auxiliary hopes that poppies may bloom o'er the hearts of all the \Vilmette people on Poppy Day. ~· Glve Mother a Beautiful Box of BILLY BOY I-I uge tender pecans, ahnonds, cashew kernels -fresh, crisp and delicious-arranged artistically ,,·ith dainty candied orange stra\vs. _....
