April 19, 1929 WILMETTE LIFE Garden Talks · (Contrib1tted by Wilmette Garden Club) Mrs. J. Fred McGuire Claimed by Death f4onday Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2 :30 o'clock in the Wilmette Parish Methodist Episcopal church for Mrs. J. Fred McGuire, S65 Sheridan road, Winnetka, who died last Monday at DeLand, Fla., after a brief illness. Mrs. McGuire is survived by her husband, J. Fred McGuire, a partner is the real estate firm of McGuire and Orr; a daughter, Mrs. Florence M. Herlocker, of Kenilworth; a son, Walter ]. McGuire, of Glencoe, and three grandchildren. For more than thirty years Mrs. McGuire had been a resident of the north shore. She was born in Lindsay, Ontario, and lived for a number of years in Cleveland before coming to Chicago in 1887. She was married to Mr. McGuire in 1888. Dr. Horace G. Smith, pastor of the Wilmette Methodist church, of which Mrs. McGuire was a member, officiated at the funeral services. Burial took place at Memorial Park cemetery. ,... ' .... ' I It is rumored that there is soon to be another new garden cl~b in Wilmette-a la·rge one-and another in North Evanston. It is encouraging to us who for years have been urging, in this column and ~tsewhere, the formation of new garden clubs in our community, to hear this. \Ve hope other groups who are interested n igardening, but have not yet' formed a c_lub, will follow their example. The Wilmette Garden club is ready as it always has been, to help nevr clubs get .started-with programs and in other wa:Y-s. The Garden Club of Illinois, made up of Garden clubs of Illinois, is a great help. Sometimes a garden group is formed in the woman's society of a church, sometimes in a woman's club, sometimes the neighbors in a block get together and form one. Seven friends met in July 1922, at the home of Mrs. Bert L. Davis. and started the Wilmette Garden clubthen known as the Little Garden club. Last May. a large number of garden enthusiasts responded to an article published in the WILMETTE LIFE, and met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. D: Ewer, where they established the EYening Garden club. Last winter at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bert L. Davis.. another evening garden club was organized. A few weeks ago we alt read with great interest in the Wu.-· METTE LIFE that Mrs. Ewer had started a garden club of grade pupils in our schools. And now comes the good news of this new garden club to be formed in \Vilmette under another capable leader. To show how the garden club idea holds its enthusiasts there is a great tendency on the part of garden club members to be "joiners" of all the garden clubs availabl~, once they have started. The Wilmette Garden club at first limited its membership to twelve, and then eighteen, next to thirty. then to fifty. In 1927 the by-laws were changed to limit the membership to sixty, ten of them associate. The sixty limit has been outgrown, and the by-laws must soon be changed again to accommodate a patient waiting list. The Wilmette Garden clubs, while each distinct, with individual characteristics, all have one common purpose-to make Wilmette more beautiful. \Vilmette welcomes each one as it is formed and appreciates the efforts the clubs put forth in her behalf.
