SCOTCH TREASURER ILL Billy Grant, our Scotch treasurer, has been ill since Saturday, March 16.-Bruce Meaker, 8B Howard. Dear Boys: I started out as leather ·On a steer's back. After about three ·years on the ranch I was taken to the stockyards by train. W,hen I arrivf'd I was taken to a pen where a man put a mark on me. Then the .steer was killed and I was removed from the steer's back. From the Rtockyards I was taken to the tannery where I was finally made into leather. First I was dried In a vat which had . a lot of fans blowing and was very hot~ Then I was put in a brine solution and had the hairs removed. Then the long process of tanning was begun. I was put in a vat which contained tanni'c acid which is made from the bark of a hemlock tree. I was soaked in that vat for-let me see-about eight months. ~1any of the other hides in the vats had lived on the ranch where I came from. After being soaked we were colored. Rome r ed, some green, some light oak color, and some black. The moRt common color was a light tan. After being dried we were cut and packed in large bales · to be shipped away. I was stored in a large building for a little while and then one day l was taken and shipped to your manual training shop where I am being made into something useful. Sincerely yours, -Joe Hayes, 8B Stolp Urge Pu9ils to Join Garden Club at School Thursday, 1\larch 21, 1\lrs.
