W IJ.,Jd lt..TT·&..: 1-Jf·e March 15. 1929 Central-Laurel P.T.A. Ten Prairie Fires in Four Days Keep Our Firemen Busy After a rest of several days in which there were no fire calls the Wilmette Fire department answered twelve calls within four days, beginning last Friday, March 8. Prairie fires were responsible for most of the firemen's · activity over the week end. Two such fires occurred last Friday, one about 10 :30 a. m. at Sheridan road and Ashland ~venue and another about 1 :30 p. m. at Linden avenue and the North Shore line crossing. Business was good for the firemen on Sunday, too, when prairie fires were extinguished at the following places : Brier street and Kenilworth avenue, Kenilworth; 309 Seventeenth street, Wilmette; 1707 Central avenue, Wilmette, and South Dean road, Kenilworth. Business was -not only good, but rushing, on Monday when the Wilmette fire fighters answered three prairie fire calls within half an hour beginning at 9:15 a. m. and a fourth at .3 :45 o'clock in the afternoon. The calls came from 411 Sheridan road, 830 Chestnut avenue, 1730 Wilmette avenue, and the Skokie valley about four miles west on Lake avenue. Besides the ten pratne fires two other small fires were extinguished. At the William ]. Purcell residence, 1947 Thornwood avenue, flames from a gasoline stove set fire to the floor about 5 :30 p. m. last Saturday, March 9. On Monday, March 11, a burning fence near the ]. D. Roth residence at 1124 Forest avenue, was responsible for another fire call. In spite of the large number of fires the damage was slight in all cases. Failure of residents to watch waste paper which they were burning was said to be responsible for a number of the prairie fires . NoRTH.
