Club Hear About Bug SUNDAY CLUB SPEAKER OPENS CHARITY DRIVE Battles Monday ~-------____, Great Religious Leader an d Orator to Be Heard·This Sunday; Music by Milan Lusk Bishop Francis J. McConnell of the New York area of the Methodist Episcopal church, will speak at the Wilmette Sunday Evening club March 17. His subject has not been announced. Bishop McConnell is one of the outstanding preachers of the era and is in almost constant demand for talks before both religious and secular org-anizations. He was graduated fr~m Ohio Wesleyan university and received his Ph. D. degree at Boston c 4niversity in 1897. He has received honorary degrees from Boston university, Ohio Wesleyan, Hanover college and W esleyan university. He entered the ministry in 1894 and was pastor of several churches in the east before being elected president of De Pauw univerversity in 1909. He was elected a bishop of the Methodist church in 1912, since which time he was active for several years in the southwest section of the United States and in Mexico. He has long been ·regarded as an authority on the Me~ican political and religious situation. In 1916 Bishop McConnell was elected president of the Religious Educational association. He is the author of th-e following books: "The Diviner Immanence," "Religious Certainty," "Christian FociUs," "The Increase of Faith," "Personal Christianity," "Understanding the Scriptures," ·"Democratic Christianity," "Public Opinion and Theology," "The Preacher and the People," "Is God Limited?" and "The Christlike God." The music program at the Sunday club will be provided by Milan Lusk of Wilmette, violinist, of international reputation. Mr. Lusk's appearance is heralded as one of the outstanding features of thi~ season's Sunday club programs. Dr. David J. Davi3, dean of the medical school of the University of Illinois and outstanding authority on bacteriology in the Middle West, has been· secured by the Men's club of the First Congregational church for its meeting Monday evening, March 18. The Men \; club considers itself for tunate in being able to secure Dr. Davis who will address the club after dinner on "Bug Battles, or What About Cancer?" The address will be illustrated with pictures which were made exclusively for Dr. Davi'3. The Men 's club has issued a general invitation to the men of the Village to attend this stag-smoker meeting at the church. Shannon to Give "Pep" Talk; Complete De· taila of Campaign Tonight is the night-and the Wilmette Masonic temple auditorium the place for that combined business and "pep" session of Wilmette Community Chest workers. Several hundred volunteer workers, who on Sunday, St. Patrick's Day, will go over our village with the proverbial fine-tooth comb in quest of contributions to swell the $35,000 budget of the 1929 Community Chest, will assemble tonight for a dinner, final instructions concerning the campaign program, and a general rally program which will include a demon3tration by Wilmette Boy Scouts and what promises to be a stirring appeal voired by none other than Dr. Frederick F. Shannon, minister of Central church, Chicago, whose voice is heard by millions of radio listeners every Sunday morning. Wilmette young women affiliated with the Junior Auxiliary of the Infant \Velfare society will serve the dinner. President ·· Hector · Dodds of the Chest association will act as chairman of the meeting. Army "Diacipline" Sunday's intensive campaign will be conducted in true army fas}:tion with "privates" working under "captains," who in turn will be directed by "colonels." Charles A. Burrows is general chairman of the campaign committee. Beneficiaries who will receive Community Chest altotments this year include : Arden Shore, Infant Welfare, .Salvation Army, Local Charities, Near ~ast Reli~f .. Young 'Yoman's Christtan assoc1atton, Amencan Red Cross (Chicago Chapter), and the Boy Scouts of America (Wilmette council).
