March 8, 1929 WILME'TTE LIFE 55 Pointers for Home Builders A new combination casement and projected window has been recently manufactured which is a distinct aid in the securing of a cross ventilation in a room. At present, because of cost, this window is chiefly installed in office buildings, schools and expensive homes. In design it offers two side hinged, outswinging ventilators below which is .an it-at-the-top projected ventilator. Tliis window's success depends on the relation of the movable window panes to the air currents. When the projected ventilator is opened fresh air enters without any drafts for its slope directs the air over the heads of the occupants of the room. When the side hinged ventilator to the lee of the breeze is closed and the ventilator to the windward is slightly opened the passing breeze creates a suction which draws the stale air from the upper part of the room. By the combination of planes a circulation of air is provided. This table is equipped with a four waY socket so that four electrical acces-sorie.; may not only be us_ ed at the same time but no reaching or stretching is necessary as the socket is directly under the table edge and one cord and plug at the table base connects the entire unit outfit to any wall plug. A folding table set which is "electrified," if desired, now offers varied delightful possibilities for cozy breakfa sts , luncheons and late supperettes. This particular folding table and the benches come in lacquer finish and yarious shades to fit in with any kitchen decoration scheme as well as in ri ch oak and walnut finish. It can easily be carried into a living room for late suppers or Sunday night suppers before an open fire. The benches are so arranged that L\· a touch they mechanically swing beneath the table top, leaving the floor ~pace entirely free. A.dequate drainage of a basement is vital to any home . Back flowing of sewers means menace to the entire family health, besides rusting the furIlace, and piping, rotting the wood" ·ork, ·w arping the finished floor s. It can also cause the building to settle, cracking brick and plastered walls, heaving even the basement floor. There are excellent and not expensive systems of drainage on the market preventing such back flowing of sewers and protecting the underside of the building as well as the inside of the basement. Look into these systems carefully in any remodeling work you are having done or if you are having any trouble with damp or odorous basements. Fireplaces complete, like a piece of fur.niture, may be had which are ready to place against the wall. There is an iron box containing colored pieces of glass to imitate coal. Above this is a heating unit, containing electrical coils. With a turn of tlle switch, light comes on and· one sees apparently a coat .fire burning. Another switch of the coil and the heating unit begins to wqrk, heat being thrown in the room. The rear of this unit is sci arranged that air ·which is drawn up near the .floor can be pulled through the heatmg element and passed out into th~ room, in this way starting circulatton. In the dining-room a built-in sideboard may be a permanent feature copied from an old English design. A Georgian model, perhaps, with closets for bottles and drawers for linens and silver, with an ample top for set pieces. Corner closets are charming additions, and a bench under the window will not take up chair space, but add a cozy feature to the room. One of the best forms of construction for this flooring is of veeners on frame backing to prev "' nt twisting and cupping. These planks are often laid with open joints to give an appearance of age. Wide planking is adaptable to almost every foreign or d?mestic wood, and ranks among the highest types of floor construction. . It is n~t dimcult to adapt an Enghsh extenor to an American plan bungalow and the g·ood points of neither need be sacrificed. Even the studio living room of ye old England may be incorporated into an otherwise purely '\merican bungalow if desired.
