March 1, 1929 WILMETTE LIFE NORTH SHORE COURT RULES RAILROAD February, Record MUST ABOUSH DANGER· Month, Is Report High Tribunal in Far-~eaching Decision Upholds Right to Require Crossing Protection In a decision of far reaching importance, the United States Supreme court recently upheld the right of a state to require railroads to abolish dangerous grade crossings, according to Charles M. Hayes, of Winnetka, president of the Chicago Motor Club. ·The specific opinion was that in the appeal of the Lehigh Valt~y Railroad Co. vs. the board of public utility commissioners of New Jersey. The decision, according to Mr. Hayes, who re ceived a summary of it from the American Automobile Association, Washington, D. C., is expected to have a far reaching effect on the growing sentiment throughout the country to abolish crossings that are potential death traps. · The A. A. A. summarized the de cision as follows: "The decision means that \Vhen railroad companies occupy lands in the state for use in commerce, the state has a constitutional right to insist that a highway crossing shall not oe dangerous to the public. and that where reasonable safety of the public requires abolition of grade crossings, the railroad cannot prevent the exercise of the Police power to this end MOTOR NEWS ·} 10,000 Chevrolet Dealers Busy Demonstration Week Ten thousat1d Chevrolet dealers in every part of the country, assisted by more than 20,000 salesmen, participated last week in National Demonstration Week at Detroit, the result being that hundreds of thousands of persons experienced without obligation their first rides in the new Chevrolet six. Although it was the first time the company had undertaken a project of this sort, sales executives, basing their opinion on the enthusiastic reports of dealers and . salesmen, have alrt-ady j_ udged it as overwhelmingly successful. Demonstration week began simultaneously last Monday in every city, town and hamlet of the country iu v>hich a Chevrolet dealer is located. Dealers arranged special mechanical displays in their salesrooms. In all cases the demonstration rides led over routes. chosen to bring out every performance feature of the new six. E. Springer of Surburban Nash Sales, Winnetka dealer. They play an important part in the close inspection operations where dimensions to within one-millionth of an inch-the close5t and most accurate measurement known -are used m producing the "400" Series. Light waves, too utilized in the special master gauge which forms the absolute in Nash precision, are employed in measurement. The master guage is used to test and regulate more than three hundred gauges used in the plants and is one of the mo~t interesting instruments developed m modern motor car manufacturing. It regulates the working gauges which, in turn have jewel bearings-a super accurac~"" feature said to be an exclusive Nash safeguard. To utilize light waves, special lenses are brought into play and lig~t is pr~ jected on the gauge to be mspected as compared with a perfect master model. Any variation in the size of the two objects produces light rays, each indicating a mittionth part of an inch. Thousands of snap gauges and fixed micrometers are also used through the factories. The biggest sale and delivery February in the history of the Skokie Motor company of Wilmette is reported by D. W. Leonard, North Shore distributor. In spite of the fact that this month is the shortest of the year Mr. Leonard says that it surpassed all other months. Increasing delivery of cars from the factory is the reason for the big month, according to the dealer. It is said that the Forf.i A is soon to have a new four speed gearset with an over drive. The new transmission was designed particularly for the new Ford by the Muncie Gear Company and for the present it will be sold only for that usage. by the excuse that such change would interfere with interstate commerce or lead to the bankruptcy of the railroad. "The New Jersey utility commisioners ordered the railroad to abolish grade crossings and construct ovC;rhead crossings according to a plan for keeping the highway straight at an estimated cost of $324,000, and rejected a plan by which the highway would have three six degree curves within a distance of half a mile, with cuts, at an estimated cost of $205,000, the highway being a main artery of traffic." WHEN CLUTCHES SLIP Slipping in disc clutches usually is traceable to one of two causes-a weak clutch spring or too thin a lubricant. The mortorist. can do a great deal to prevent the former trouble by keeping his foot off the clutch whenever possible. Do not keep the car in gear and constantly slip the clutch while waiting for or starting away on the traffic light. I. MOTORS SERVICE Incorpol'qtet/ ) EVER.VTHING ./b·dle AUTOMOBILE NEVER.
