~ebr,u~ry 15, i929 WILMETTE LIFE .. In this day, business men seem not too "tired" to indulge an' outside hobby to a considerable extent, sometimes taking unusual directions. In Hubbard Woods we have ]. Williams Macy, familiar to many through his work in the North Shore Theater Guild, whose hobby seems to be the singing of Gilbert and Sullivan songs on as many occasions as two or three hearers may be gathered together. Sunday afternoon, February 17. he is doing an entire program of them over WMAQ as part of the Lyon and Healy program at 1 o'clock. In radio presentations of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas it is seldom that any solo number is given in its en tirety. This is due to the necessity of boiling dowi1 an opera which runs some two and a half hours as given on the stage, to a radio showing of only an hours duration. This is rather too bad, as applied particularly to the remarkable songs in which ~fr. Gilbert has a character expose his life's storv-usuallv of a highly damaging nature. Iti such cases the singing of one stanza of a !'ong of some five or six, leaves much to be desired. Mr. M acy is doing a program of ten numbers selected from seven of the operas. These are all numbers which are rarely heard in their entirety over tl1e radio, and among them are included some of the famous "patter" songs, such as the "Nightmare" from Iolanthe, the .M ajor General's song from "Pirates of Penzance" and King Gama's "Disagreeable Man" song from "Princess Ida." The other numbers are from "Mikado," "Pinafore," "Yeomen of the Guard" and "Gondoliers." The following books have been added to the Wilmette PUbllc library thls week, Miss Anne L.
