_ F ebruary 8, 1929 WILMETTE LIFE 2J High School Chess Men Invite :North Shore Folk New Trier Divides . .Lose to Hyde Park Team to Ski Meet in Preserve Cage Tangle With New Trier · High school chess teams The fifth annual Ski tournament of Boys From Cicero have been breaking even in their the Forest Preserve Winter Sports The New Trier cage quintets, with the aid of the lforton fives, re-enacted Friday night at the New Trier gym two struggles which occurred at Cicero just before the holidays, for the Grey and Green lights again whipped Morton, the count being 38 to 16, thereby putting their seasonal . record up to six straight league wins. A little later in the evening the New Trier heavies again fell before the powerful Cicero five in a very one-sided and uninteresting encounter, the result being 38 to 19. In the lightweight affair, N cw Trier got off to a fast start before the qt1arter was many minutes old, for Berol, Reed and Saxton made a ringer respectively and thereby gave the home team a 6 to 0 advantage. But this lead seemed to wake the visiting team up, and before New Trier was aware of the fact, the Cicero boys had, by means of some fine passing and close guarding. jumped into an 8 to 7 lead. Reed, of New Trier, after a minute or so of play, came through with a nice shot to give the local boys a slight edge on the visitors, but Rubado, Morton's small guard, sank a basket and the gun went off with Morton ahead by a 10 to 9 score at the end· of the first quarter. The second quarter continued in this sec-saw style with first one team on top, and then the other until the fif!al part of the quarter when Captam · Saxton of the home team put in one of his well known long shots from the side of the floor to put the Indian Hill boys on top of a 16 to 13 tune as ' the first half closed. The second half found conditions somewhat different, for through the marksmanship of Reed. Saxton, and MacLean, New Trier chalked up sixteen points, while the visitors were adding nothing to their record. \Vith Saxton making two· more baskets following this rally and MacLean one in New Trier's favor, Coach Grater decided to put in the second team and stop the slaughter. The second team were able to hold Morton scoreless and add one point to the New Trier score and thus the affair ended with New Trier the victors by a 38 to 16 count. The heavyweight game started off with a rush and with Kawai and Syk<?ra of the visitors alternating at makmg baskets, Morton swamped Kew Trier and ran up a 16 to 0 lead before the local boys were even able to score. Morton's second and third teams \Yere th en sent in shortly after the start of the second quarter and against them K ew Trier was able to make some heachn.Y and increase their score somewhat. Tov<ards the end of the game ~lorton's first team again were sent into action and they continued to display a fine brand of basketball and won easily by a 38 to 19 count. matches thus far this year. Hyde Park High school took the measure of the New Trier chess players twice, but Lakeview was less fortunate, losing both of its clashes with the New Trier teams. ' A tentative match is scheduled with Waukegan High school, but no date has been announced. Morton Mergentheim, of Winnetka, is captain of the New Trier chess players, and Joseph Schumacher is the faculty sponsor. A chess tournament has been in progress at the school for some time, with eight of the 40 original entrants already eliminated. : Mrs. I.
