February 1, l929 WILMETTE LIFE 21 Samuel Thaviu to Play New Trier Grabs Wl·th Chicago Symphony Twin Cage Clash Samuel Thaviu, brilliant youhg north From Oak Parkers shore violinist, will be the .soloist with By Winalow Wright New Trier's light and heavyweight cage · quintets· added another notch in their ·victory belts Friday night when they whipped their old rivals, Oak Park, in two closely fought struggles on the Indian Hill floor. The Grey and Green heavies; who displayed byt far their best basketball of the year, were able to outclass the visitors and defeat them by a 23 to 20 count. The New Tder ponies, on the other hand, played an extremely ragged game and only through a fourth quarter rally were able to eke out a 16 to 15 victory and thereby keep their league slate clean with five victories thus far this season. The fir st quarter of the heavyweight affair had plenty of excitement in it but neither of the teams were able to · find the basket until the latter part of the quarter when Coombs, the visitor's center who had five fi eld goals and one free throw to his credit when the game ended, sank a shot to give, his team the slight lead of 2 to 0. A minut e later or so Tom Hicks made a free throw to lesson the visitor's advantage but Coombs came right back with another basket to give Oak Park a 4 to 1 lead which it maintained till the close of the quarter. The second quarte · New Trier began to get its passes working better and as a result, Captain Nelson sank two baskets in quick succession to put New Trier on top of a 5 to 4 score. His teammates, Hicks and Thompson each followed with a basket while a little later Lovett of the Orange and Blue sank a short but under the watchful eyes of the New Trier guards, Schroeder and Borncamp, Oak Par~ was unable to add any more to their score this half and it closed 9 to 6 in the home team's favor. The second half ~ontinued in much the same manner as the first with both teams doing about an equal amount of scoring although New Trier managed to retain its slight lead. In the last quarter with the score New Trier 22, Oak Park 18, four minutes left to play, and both teams fighting furiously, Coombs sunk a long shot to cut New Trier's margin down to two points. But at this point New Trier braced and held for the last three minutes and a free throw by Thompson gave the homt: team a 23 to 20 lead which it clung to till the close . of the struggle. In the lightweight game scoring was quite slow in the first part of the first half, for the passing of both teams was poor and neither of the teams were able to make even the few shots offered them. But finally, through the last minute ringers of Magliano and Boyles, Oak Park was able to quit the first half with the count 9 to 7 in its favor. In the third quarter both teams continued playing a listless game of ball and a free throw was the only scoring done. But at the start of the fourth quarter Saxton of New Trier tied the score and from then on it was a battle royal from which New Trier emerged the victors. Mrs. R. F.
