Debate Teams ·Launch Rehearsals for Busy Schedule New Trier High school's debating squad engaged in the first practice clash of the year last Friday when the sophomore team, composed. of Albert Denton, Lowell Comee and Olin Sethness, defeated the senior team, composed of John Erickson~ · Marjorie Koenig and Dorland Davis. The sophomores upheld the jury syst~m, taking the negative side of the question, Resolved: "That the jury system should be abolished." The practice debate was judged by Miss Maybelle Payton, a member of the New Trier faculty, who gave her criticisms at the conclusion of the speeches. Next week the two New Trier teams will clash again, upholding the same sides of the jury question-seniors favoring the abolishment of the jury, and sophomore·s defending it. Lois Goldstein may be given a chance to speak as a member of the affirmative team in the forthcoming debate. Chester E. ·M acLean, New Trier c!ebatc coach, annomH:ed this week that the Tri-Ship boys' club of the hi~h school will boost the debating activities by selling tickets for contests to be held at New Trier. The club will receive half of the profits. Sanguinet \Viltiams will direct the club's activities in connection with debate work. 1"\ew Trier's debate schedule has not been completed, although tentative plans have been made for debates with Roosevelt High school of Chicago, Urbana High school, and Morgan Park Military academy. Cleveland, 1927 champions of Ohio, will come to New Trier for a debate on May 10. New Trier and Cleveland have met twice before in debate, New Trier winning in 1927 and Cleveland last year.
