Stiles set out to "make" his career he chose banking. It was necessary, of course, to start at t.Ve bottom, so he went to the Corn Exchange bank in Chicago and got himself a job as messenger. With the landing of the job he adopted the slogan : "Once a banker, always a banker," and he has adhered to it so tenaciously that he advance,!~ step by step in the business with the result that todav he is vice-president and cashier o( the First National Bank of Wilmette. If there is, he tiasn't discovered it. - Mr. Stiles was born in Chicago, in the Edgewater district and there obtained his early schooling. He was with the Corn Exchange bank a little over a year when he packed up and hopped out to Iowa. In Des Moines he took another b~~k job as messenger and it was here that advancement began. Successively he became bookkeeper and teller-all within a period of five years. When America became e~broiled in the World war, Dan enlisted at Camp Dodge. He became an instructor in Officers Training Camps, not only at Camp Dodge but at Fort Snelli~g !n Minnesota and at Camp Lewts m Washington. He enlisted in 1917 and on Jan. 1 of 1919 was given his discharge from the service. He was at Camp Lewis · when the Armistice was signed, and after leaving the army ret urned to Des Moines. His stay in the Iowa capital was of only six months duration, after which he came back to Chicago. The urge to live in a suburb was strong and he selected Wilmette. He became vice-president of the Wilmette State bank in 1920.
