This line goes from New Zealand t0 Samoa. One of the newest islands of the Pacific is Falcon Island along this line. It was tirst discovered in 1865 and reported as a shoal by a ship tra,·eling in that direction. Jt was named for the ship H. M. Falcon. l.ater it appeared as a small island about 100 yards in diameter and disappeared agai[l. In the early 1900's it came back ag-nin and was two miles in diameter with a height of 290 feet. It was larger than before, being of circular f'hape. :-;ince then it disappeared and about two years 1ater a terrific eruption occurred on that spot. Nothing more was seen of the island till 1927 when it reappeared again. It was then two miles in diameter and 365 feet in height (and still is). It is circular shape as before. It has a large crater at one point of the island and a small one within the larger crater. The small one has steeper sides. It is steaming all the time and the ground, if you might call it that, hisses as one walks on it. Most of the surface In the crater is a boiling lake in the shape of a figure eight. ·T his lake bulges in places and boils incessantly. The edges of the crater are in v-shaped ~ullies and sulphur arises from them which has made the sides of the gullies orange, yellow and white colors. Along the sides of the crater there are greenish gmy stripef'. lo New Zealand at the end of this volcanic line there is a geyser that blew up and went 1,500 feet several years ago. 1t was composed of mud, stones, rocks, : -tnd scalding water. These usually last hut a fraction of a second. The flag of the Tongo islands has been planted 110 the highest point of the I· alcon islands. The Tongo islands be:ong to the British government and they llnve a queen with a parJiment and ··abinet under her. There are about 300 islands with 27,000 inhabitants. It is expected that the present Falcon i!-:land will disappear as before but it i:-on't any u:-;e anyway except as a ··uriosity, becauRc it is so hot and volr·anic.-Beth 1\Jcllraith, SA StolJl.
