Dr. Jacques Gordo!) is director of the quartet, which was founded in 1921. He is rec~nized as a notable musical leader. He is concertmaster both of the Chicago . Symphony orchestra and of the Ravinia Opera or·chestra. Born ~n Odessa, Ru~sia, he was graduated from · the lmper1al consei"Vatory under ProfessQi' Stupka. At the age of 15, he came to the United States where he further perfected his art under the late Franz Kneisel. He has been a member of the Berkshir~ StrinK" quartet and later formed his own organization whic~ bears his name. He has played in . co~.certs with Harold Bauer a·nd other artists. Net.~ Y.oliDiat Walter Hancotk, another mem&er of the quartet, is ·oht of the important violinists of the Chicago Symphony orchestra. Born in England, he came to this country at an early age and studied under various masters. He . was a pupil oi Hugo Hermann. Clarence Evans, principal viola of the Chicago Symphony orchestra. ·and conductor of the Chicago ~usmess Men's' orchestra, is the third member of the quartet. He studied the viola w.ith Hugo Kor.tschak·· He h~s been a member of "the Berksh1re Strmg quartet and~ the San Francisco · Chamber Music .. society and has given many viola recitals with great success. The fourth member of ~he group is 'Richard Wagner, who is one of the leaders in the 'cello 'section of the Chicago Symphony orchestra. Born in Canada, he studied 'cello with his father and later was principal 'celloist of the St. Paul Symphony orchestra under the late Henry Rotwell. . Praised by Critics The Gordon String quartet, now in seventh season, has won recognition from the concert public as ·well as the press for its artistic perfor~ances. During the last two years it has had the honor to play 12 concerts under the auspices of the Library of Congress. Keller, of 820 Greenwood ~ avenue, returned to Wilmette last 11111 Wednesday from Wisconsin, where ~ she had been called by the illness and ~ death of her aged mother, Mrs. Charles 1111 Schwalbe. Mrs. Schwalbe died SaturAf day, December 1, at Appleton, Wis., ~ at the home of her daughter, Mrs. 1111 Alex Mielke. She was 81 years of age and had spent the greater part of her ~ life on a farm near Niles, Wis. Burial 1111 took place at Chilton, Wis., where Mrs. Schwalbe lived for a few years.
