October 12, 1928 WILMETTE LIFE 15 New Junior Policemen D. I. DAVIS PRAISES SweU Guards to 39 Boys SPORTS IN WD.IE'ITE · A new squad of Junior Poli'ce was lntramand Syatem Comparea Favorably in Natioaal Recreation Congress "I have found that we have one of the finest systems of intramural athletics in the entire state of Illinois and one favorably comparable to any in. the country," Daniel M. Davis, Dtrector of Recreation who has just returned from the National Recreation Congt_:ess in Atl~ntic City last week, announced. Mr. Davis said that more children are reached through our after school progr~m in Wilmette than in any other place and that practically 90 per cent Qj the boys and at least 75 p~r cent of the girls take part in some athletic sport once or twice each week. Football is Popular "Especially is this true of the intramural football season which closes this week. Every room in both par-: ochial and public schools inclusive of the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades is represented by at least one team of eleven members in the various leagues. Leagues are conducted in each grade, insuring that only fifth grade boys play fifth grade boys, sixth grade boys play sixth grade boys." Harry L. Allen, Chicago district representative of the Playground and Recreation Board of America, has also paid tribute to the Wiimette intramural athletic system placing it in first place compared with other systems in the district, including all Illinois, part of Wisconsin, and part of Indiana. "I was also gratified to find that Chicago, Detroit, St Paul, Ottawa and Hamilton, Ontario, and other large systems used the same method of ilooding their skating . rinks in the winter time that we use here in Wilmette," Mr. Davis continued. Small Hoae Beat "St. Paul which is known as having the best winter sports in the ·entire country uses the small 1y;:; inch hose \\'hich we adopted last year. We found out early in the year that we cauld obtain better ice and obtain it more qiuckly by the use of the small hose than by the large fire hose generally used for that purpose. As a result we had ice for skating almost every day cold enough to freeze it! "Another thing that I found out at the convention was that our adult program in Wilmette compares favorably with any program produced by towns its size and is, in my opinion, somewhat better than some of them. We are conducting more activities and reaching a larger percentage of people with our intramural and adult athletics than any comparable town in size and facilities in the state or country according to information I obtained by talking with the various directors and superintendents at the convention." placed on duty last week, swelling the total to thirty-nine members guarding the street corners and crossings to insure the safety of school children, Glen W. Gathercoal announces. The new squad is placed at Howard school and is really a reorganization and expansion of the patrol in force there last year. The number of patrols has been enlarged to two with a lieutenant and three patrolmen for each patrol and a school captain acting as supervisor and leader. · There are five patrols at Stolp school and a school captain and two patrols at Loga·n school with a school captain. The Junior Police is a feature of the Wilmette Playground and Recreation board in charge of Mr. Gathercoal, one of the staff assistants of the board. Give Your Party Here!
