A., an attendance of 50% of enrolled members is a good average. At least some such percentage of this organization attended the meeting Tuesday, October 2, the first of the season. Miss Baker, who is an instructor at the National Kindergarten and Elementary college, is also an author, having written school readers now used hy our children. Her talk on the subject, .. ~rhat the Home Can Do for the School," contained many helpful ideas for parents. Having described methods of more closely uniting the home and the school through parentteacher activities Miss Baker said the next most important thing is first to see that the child is truly fit. for school with nourishing food, fresh air, an~l sufficient rest as essentials. The parent's attitude should be such as . to encourage the child rather than discourage him, as fear and worry have a paralyzing effect. While children in this loc(!lity have the advantage of good homes and healthful surroundings, that make for strong bodies their minds are often over-stimulated with amusement and excitement. To offset this danger a larger experience with nature is desirable as in gardening or the care of pets; and when varties are given, smaller groups with quiet amusements such as reading have more beneficial effects. Extra lessons, such as music or dancing, should not be undertaken too soon. Even if the child shows some aptitude in this direction, any seeming adv~ntage . will be at the expense of some other development. If the child is sturdy physically and happy socially, the finer accomplishments will follow in due time.
