WILMETTE LIFE Story of Ouilmette, French Founder, Is Related by Git·l Antoine Guilmette was the man for whom Wit.:nette was named. Antoine Guilmette, a Frenchman, was born near Montreal about 1760. He worked for the American Fur company and came . to Chicago in 1790. ~e lived near the Chicago river and bUilt a cabin a short distance west of what was later the Kingie house. In 1797 his marriage to a Pottawattamie woman was celebrated in Gross Point. She was · Archange Ouilmette. Ouilmette was living across .the river from Fort Dearborn at the t1me of the massacre. As a friend of the Indians he was not harmed. Many sought protection in his cabin at this time. For a time Ouilmette was the only citizen of Chicago. About 1829 he moved north and occupied the territory a little south of the Wilmette-Kenilworth boundary to Central street, Evanston, from Lake Michigan to the present North Western railroad tracks. lf was granted to his wife by the trea_ty of Pr~irie du Chien, July 2!), 182!). He was the father of eight children, and a member of the Militia company.
