Estimates by the American Road Builders' association show, 26,618 persons kiUed in highway accidents · in 1927, 798,700 seriously injured, and economic losses of ' f[J7Z,fi11,(XXJ, exclusive of minor damage to motor vehicles, according to a bulletin received by the Chicago Motor club. The total killed was an increase of 1,316 over 1926, and the injuries and attendant losses bring forcibly to mind the need for "immediate adoption of uniform traffic codes and expansion of the na~ tion's road building programs," the bul· letin points out. "The human factor· is the main element contributing to these accidents," it added, "but that human factor could be offset to a large extent by adequate motoring facilities and regulation, coupled with th~ individual practice of courtesy and caution." Grade crossing fatalities were said to have decreased for the first eleven months of 1927, the number of persons killed totaling 2,210 as compared with 2.U' for the same period the year before. While reports frotp various sections of the country indicate that there has been a slight falling off in the volume of building it is of high interest to note that this condition does not exist on the north shore; in fact the figures for the first quarter of the year indi- . cate that nearly every town between Chicago and Waukegan and including Waukegan has registered more than a substantial gain. These towns include Evanston, Wilmette, Kenilworth, Winnetka, Glencoe, Highland Park, Lake Forest, and W~ukegan. . Mter May 1st, we will occupy our new store, 806-810 Grove Street. Keailwortla Pacemaker Kenilworth, which, oddly enough, was one of the few north shore villages to register a loss last year, struck out in the· first three months of the year and established that village as the pacemaker, by making a gain of 131 ·per cerit over last year. This gain totaled $221,133. The figures which were compiled by the S. W. Straus company, show Wilmette, Glencoe and Winnetka far ahead of last year, but Evan'Ston, which set a record feat last year, has fallen behind considerably: in the quarter recently ended. Highland Park practically held even with last year.
