I Wu.111m Lift: Last night I was reading through your last issue of Wilmette Life and in one of the editorials you sure struck the key note, where you · stated that few people on the north shore · realize the conditions of want and poverty in our village. · . It has been the writer's pleasure to be on the Board of Local Charities in our village for the la~t twelve or thirteen years and in that time we have had cases to deal with that in soaae respects equal any cases in the city. When the board was organized, a good many years ~o, it was to act as a clearing house for the churches. When we found a .case that needed attention we tried to ascertain the religious affiliations of the parties an·l turned the case over to the churcll where they belonged. It was not long, however, before the tables turned and the churches were turning cases over Editor~ RECEIPTS Cash on hand .... ................ $415.18 Thanksglvlq offering from · · Churches. S~ Self Reapect · Of course our big aim in Wilmette has been to take care of the children, and also to try and eliminate poverty as much as possible. In order to do this, we have tried to impress upon our people the importance of self respect. The Economy Shop has been a great aid to us in this work, as our people can go down there and buy clothing and other articles for a very small sum and, regardless of the amount, they are buying just that much self respect and can tell their children that they · purchased this, instead of saying, "someone gave it to us." As Wilmette has grown, our job has grown and we have given it very little publicity, as we feel that the work we are in is rather a sacred trust and if publicity were given it, it would be detrimental to the c;luse. We not only have the distribution of fuel, clothing and groceries to tak~ care of.J but, in many cases we have to listen to family arguments, neighborhood quarrels and, in several cases, tt) act as peace-maker between husband and wife "for the sake of the children." So you can therefore see things of thi:~ kind cannot be published. In the last year we have given aid to forty-one families in Wilmette. Mrs. Lillian D. Northam, makes the following comments regarding the above families : The abOve families ue visited regularly. I might add many more names but these serve as an example. Whenever any of the above are ill I take them to the Evanston . Hospital clinic. · They are treated free of .:h~e.
