Welfare Auxiliary Holds Lortl'1 Obtain.Rare an Election of Oflicen · Collection of ·Fine S. K. Jorjorian, manager of the Oriental Rug department at Lord's, Evanston, has just returned from the East with a $75,000 private collection of antique rugs · that formerly belonged to Hadji Meshet Kasum, of Teheran, Persia. . The collection is remarkable not only for its unusually distinctive rugs -some of makes rarely found in any group offered for sale at retail-but for numerous ornamental pieces, and cloths. There is, for instance, an antique Jejim horse blanket of th~ sort used on Arab racing horses. The dulled red stripes exhibit small conventional figures. The black stripes are plain. There is a rare example of a Turk~ ish envelope bath bag, with a tasseled border. A bride's bedspread, tightly woven of twisted pure silk, is a miracle of color and design. In its · many-colored stripes are scores of religious symbols. A gift of this sort was frequently presented by a bride to her prospective husband. as an example of her skill in weaving. . A brilliantly-striped couch cover ts woven of tightly-twisted pashim, the soft. fine wool of the young lamb. There is a striped tent drapery, formerly used to separate the women's f}Uarters from the men's, by the Mohammedan Arabs. You will see camel's saddlebags. some bordered in a contrasting band. into which is interwoven a gold thread. These are chiefly very fine Bokhara and Beluc.histan weaves. And a shepherd's lunch hag. coneshaped. and woven beautifully of brilliant colors. The gem of the entire collection is a superb Antique Yczd carpet .. woven by the little-known Yezd tnhes of Persia who worship in a still different fashion than the Mohammedans and Zoroastrians of Persia. In the Yezd country there were located some of the royal looms upon which were woven by masters of the craft. huge palace' carp~ts for the. Persian Shah.s. This parttcular rug 1s 26-4 x 16-? tn size. It has the wonderful Heratt or Feraghan design characteristics. which were orig-inated hy the Timurid Sultans. and later adopted by the Seferie Shahs of Persia. The background is of a melting rose tint. with old ivory. soft green and skv blue shading-s, giving an effect of old mosaic work. The main wide · rose border is in palmette design with a delicate spiral stem. and this has. in turn. seven smaller borders with an Egyptian lotus motif.
