AU who are interested in taking part in · productions of the North Shore Theater Guild are requested to be present ·at the Winnetka Community House, Monday, Januacy 30, either at 2 o'clock in the afternoon or 8 :30 in the evening. At this time, candidates for the Guild will be asked to give short readings, of two minutes' length, in order to acquaint the new director with the material that is available. These sessions will be open to everyone, regardless of whether or not they have taken l!_art in previous pr()ductions of the Theater Guild. It is asked that former participants in Guild activities attend the meetings so that records may be made complete and upto-date. Those attending may have their choice of selection, and may either read it or have it memorized. It is suggested by David Owen, Guild director, who will conduct the tryouts, that the pieces be memorized in order to give a better idea of voice and interpretation. The readings should not exceed two minute~ in duration. It is not for the purpose of casting any particular play that the North Shore Theater Guild is conducting these meetings, but to register information concerning all who are available for future productions. There are two remaining plays to be given this year after the present offering of "Number 17," one of which wiiJ include an exceptionally large cast. The Guild gives four plays a year, and wishes to compile a permanent casting sheet for reference. H.W ~...llllll.,. Many have planned to do worthwhile reading, but preparations for the holidays, club programs, charities and campaigns have taken the leisure time. Now these activities are either over or running smoothly. The New Year Resolutions to the effect that "I will read something on current events, or contemporary drama or philosophy" are yearning to be put into action. Practically all desire to know something about everything, and everything about something. It is another phase of specialization. "The Reading .with a Purpose"· series published by the American Library association are apt tittle books on this very thing. They are simple and adequate presentations of · subjects by experts in their field, and along with each introduction is a Jist of five or six books to be read in connection with it. They are especially valuable to the man or woman who wishes to do purposeful reading. These booklets cover a wide range of subjects. The following, however, have proved the most popular in the Wilmette Public library: "English Literature," by Carlton ; "Frontiers of Knowledge," by Bennett;. "Ears to Hear," by Mason; "Psychology". by Martin ; and "Poetry of Our Times," by Wilkinson. The latest courses that the library has received are: "Modern Drama," by Clark; "Fou,nders of the Republic," by Bowers ; "Twentieth Century American Fj~tion," by Phelps, and "The French Revolution as Told in Fiction," by Wit-. liam Stearns Davis. The library has both reference and circulating copies of these booklets, and, together with the books .they recommend, may be borrowed at any time.
