That modest ' ·if any" is disarming. It suggests that the conscience of the churches is sensitive. · They are not out fishing for compliments. They are self ,. critical, and they are asking their community to help them in a process of appraisal which is vitally testing. '"Of course the churches of Wilmette are doing real service in their village. If we knew nothing about them- and we know a little- we could say that. Even were they mere closed buildingst abandoned and silent. they would be doing the service of protest against indifference. ·· They are much more than that. The fame of the Wil mette Sunday Evening Club, in which all of the Protestant churches unite from fall to spring, has traveled far. This effort, which began before the war and has -continued un-, brokenly, has been a demonstration to the whole community of the -co-operative spirit. Further, each week in the neighborhood papers these churches unite in advertising religion. They buy space and make joint appeal in behalf of the spiritual values of life. That is real service. " NOTE : The Publicity Committee regret that they are unable to reprint this splendid editorial in its entirety .. The suggestion is made that the reader obtain a copy of the Evening Post , of May 7, and read the complete editorial. · a -.illliLtr JiJJ t· IJi \\·ork ior a tlttlllher ·' , . a r :-.
