March 4, 1927 Presbyterian~ on Top in · Volleyball League-· C om.petition By S pee tat or Last Tuesday night at the Howard school the Presbyterians . finishe.d the volley b<ill league, conducted · by the Wilmette Recreation and . Playground board under the direction of Daniel M. Davis, in first place bv beating their nearest opponents, the American Legion · I team in two straight games, 15-10 and J5 ..7. I( the American Legion I had won. the two teams would have been tied for first plal:e, but now the American Legion I must be content with second. place_ and the St. Josephs with third. The games )Vere rea11y quite a bit clpser than the score would indicate, and several times the American Legion I would start a rally only to be effectively stopped by the setting up of E. (Spindles) Hill and the wonderful spiking of C. Burlingham. In fact the latter two starred for the Presbyterians, while .L C. Anderson and P. A. Kier starred fqr the American Legion. Most of the time it was one side out after another with a team occa:,ionally sneaking a point. The spectators, and there were spectators, consisted mostly of members of the American Leg on and their sister organization, the American Legion Auxiliaries. There were some accessories also. Coupling the spectators' screams ·.vith the yeJls of the St. Josephs II's there was quite a racket. It was a pity that all this cheering was in vain. The Presbyterians. playing like a well oiled machine, and without their associates to see them play, tended to busines s and counted when they could. The officia,ls of Tuesday night's game were carefully selected from the volley hall players in town. For referee there was Herwig Toeffen of ·the Congregationals, E. McDow and E. Carlson of the Baptists were linesmen, and C. S. Beat; a newcomer . in our activi· ties, was· scorekeeper. The next activity in volley ball will be an elimination tournament starting next Monday night and continuing lmtil a winn.e r is declared. Next Manjay's _ games are between the Howard P. T. A. and American Legion and hetween the Presbyter-ians and St. ] oseph I. The Baptists and St. Joseph II drew byes. -~. .. "I never bought better clothes .
