October 22, 1926 WILMETTE LIFE amine the condition of the trees and report what ones needed feeding, pruning, cabling or cavity work, as well as those that were dead or otherwise, without hope of ~aving, and therefore should be removed. "Trees of Wilmette are in better shape than expected. This means that most of the citizens do appreciate the great value of the trees and, in general, have taken care of those in the street in front of their property, as well as on their lots. The number of dead trees, however, is higher than we like to admit and calls for further study. Show Remedy Needs "A tabulation of the condition and needs of the trees by zones is as follows: SURVEY SHOWS TREES IN GOOD CONDITION Village Board Hears Results of. Inspection Made by Boy Scouts This Summer Results of the re'cent survey of Wilmette's shade trees located on parkways throughout the village, made by Boy Scouts under direction of Scout Commissioner George R. Harbaugh, and an expert forester, were brought to the attention of the Village board at its meeting Tuesday evening of thi~ week. It was reported that the trees were in better shape than anticipatd. The report of the survey, presented hy the Public Service committee of the board comprised of Trustees Drayer, De Berard and Becker, was as follows: "The Boy Scout survey of street trees in our village has been completed. Not only has the village benefited by having these fine, young men do their bit in civic duty, but the results of the survey are very dependable. "The field work of cataloging the trees by location, size and variety was under the direct supervision of an expert forester and tree specialist. He has made a list of all trees needing attention . in the streets, whether cavity work, feeding, pruning, cabling or removal. The village was divided into four parts, or zones, for survey purposes. Liat 8,500 Treea "Nearly 8,500 trees were listed and examined for defects. Record in standard field books was made of the location of each tree, tts size, kind and condition. After the boys had finished their part of the work an expert forester was employed by the chairman of the public service committee, under authority from the board, to re-ex- with Feeding Pruning Cavity Dead Cabling Zone 1- 40 115 18 44 17 Zone 2- 27 110 6 21 4 Zone 3- 5 50 ·3 7 1 Zone 4- 7 38 6 6 2 7G 313 33 78 24 "The job in some ways was a bit bigger than at first appreciated, so Major Harbaugh and Tru'Stee Drayer decided to limit the survey to old Wilmette (before annexation in the last two years), and to street trees only. Trees in alleys and on other public grounds, such as parks, remain to be listed and their condition .reported. T MESTJIAN BROTHERS you will see some of the finest floor coverings on the North Shore. A Will Inform Citizen· "In order that this work of the Boy Scouts may be most useful to the community, we feel that each citizen should be told of any trees needing attention in front of his home. This we propose to do by directing a letter with the information at~ached to each home in front of each tree needing attention. . "Thanks are extended Major Harbaugh, and through him to the Boy Scouts for the willingness with which they took up these duties of practical 1 Icitizenship and for the ability shown in getting the job done." .
