Spalding Plays as if Inspired ·At Music Club By GE N E VI EVE WHIT MAN OPTOMETRISTS CONFER Dr. Berach , Local Specialiat, Tella of lntereating Facta Brought Out at Convention Laat Week The annual convention of the Illinois State Society of Optometrists was held at the Sherman hotel on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday of this week. Dr. 0. H. Bersch, ~f Wilmette. who attended, reported a most interesting meeting, there being present representative optometrists from all parts of the state. Committee reportS verified the fact that the past year was the most active year in the histoty of the society. Twenty-two public free clinics were conducted through the state since last Augu t, at which the eyes of about 2700 persons were examined and over 2500 prescriptions given for glasses. That these c!inics have met \Yith public approval 1s attested by the favorable report. received ny officers and members of the society. from the requests for return clinics. and from inquiries received hy optometrists, generally, as to the time and location of the next one. In the Albert Spalding recital last Tuesday night, the artist-recital series of the \Vinnetka Music club reached the pinnacle of success. Inspired somewhat, perhaps. by the warmth and ~ordiality of his audience, Mr. Spaldmg played witb a richness and beauty of ~one and w1t~ an authority of style whtch left nothmg to be desired His remarkably welt balanced program proved a worthy vehicle for his great art. The infrequently heard "Concerto in A minor," by Vieux Temps, was so played a . to leave his listeners quite uncon:cious of its exceptional difficulties. \Vhether in the intricacies of the "Devit's Trill" h~· Tartini. or in the sim.ple beauty ni his o\\·n "Berceuse." he was clearl~· master oi his .instrument. Test Postal Employes As an illustration, Dr. Bersch, who has taken an active part in several clinics. cite. the one held in January at the Central Y. M. C. A., in Chicago, for the po!-.t office employes. Nearly 500 employes "ere examined at that time and over 100 were turned away. It was decided to hold another clinic for these at the convention on Mondav February 18. In addition to the or-iginal applicant::;, over 700 more applied for examination. One of the the one most interesting read was pertaining to reports the resuit of the vision test made at the Coliscum during the automobile show. This test was a voluntary one, made to determine the percentage of Jrivers of cars with poor vision. Of a total of 2200 tests made. 341 had poor vision in one or hoth eye" of a sufficient degree · to eta . sify them as dangerous drivers. Follo\\·ing the reading of this report a resolution 'vas passed urging the . tate legislature to enact a law rcquiring the passing of a standard vision test before granting a license to drive a car. Tn California where such a law has hre11 i11 operation the past . }·ear. it was discovered that a large percentage of drivers participating in accidents had dcfectiYe eyesight-were unable to see clearh· and that this condition was the cause. or a contributing cause to the acridents. - W est S.ide to Get Sewer and Water Connections .
