Secretary of ·state Loui: L. Emmerson estimated this week. The estimate is based upon the increase in registration up to this time as compared with the same period last year. I i this total is reached it will exceed last year's total of 981,859 by 143,141. l..'p to October 1, 1,082,148 passenger car licenses had been issued, a considerable increase over the total for the entire Year 1924. Truck licenses on the san1e date totaled 157,131 as compared with 140,706 issued in 1924. and dealers licenses were 4,523 as compared with 4,225 last year. The fees of the automobile department available for paying off state highway bonds and highway maintenance are much larger this year. Over $12,000,000 amounting to over two million automobiles. In planning for the future therefore, and in making law , we must prepare for a still greater increase of automobiles than we now have. As congestion on the highway Increases, safe tv provisions on the part of the Ia w makers and law enforcers must in crease and drivers themselves must be more cffi cient. Up to October 1, this year $12,774,981 had been collected by the department, or an increase of $1,228.775 over the entire year 1924. Illinois ranks fifth among the states in the total number of cars registered, heing exceeded only by New York, California, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The number of all motor vehicles registered in the United States in 1924 was 17,591,981, an increa:e of approximately 2,500,000, or 17 per cent over the previous year. There is one motor car for t.'very seven persons in the l' 11 j t e cr s t a t e s. One for Every 6.8 Persons Illinois is slightly under the total with one car for every 6.8 persons. It is evident, therefore, that we are iar from the saturation point in Illinois at least. If we had as many cars per capita as Califor 1ia our present registration would he practically double.
