"Eleanor," as you may have suspect~d. is a girl, but, contrary to your perfcrtly logical deducti~?n, not a member of the human fam1ly, preferring, rather. to maintain her eminence in the ftl ther~d kingdot:n for-"Eleanor" i a r~ al. hve, talkative parrot. ~ot be ing fond of cigars, her name is not attached to one of the favorite brand<, hut, being quite fond 'of bird seed. it is in that commodity that she finch her claim to everlasting renown. In Ja nuary, 1923, the Wilmette Bird hou.;c on East Railroad avenue, in which "Eleanor" had her abiding place wa, consumed in flames. It happened in the wee sma' hours, and when dawn arrh ed the erstwhile attractive shop was a desolate waste of tangled debris. Someone heard a faint squeak, there wa s a scurry to the spot from whence came the scarcely audible sound. Followed a session of frantic digging. A bird. cage all but covered with wreckage was revealed and, frantically clinging to its upper bars was the drenched and shivering form of "Eleanor."
