V many Christma seasons have H O\ caught you wishing that you h ad a The Chicago theater-going public has been awaiting expectantly the premier of G. Bernard Shaw's new comedy, "Saint Joan," which took place last week. Last season th«: North ~hore Theatre Guild was seen in "Pygmalion" hy the same author. And now the residents of the north shore will see one of this author's mostknown. and well-liked works, when the ~t.:w Trier Dramatic club pres-ent s "Androclcs and the !.ion" on Fric.lay eveninf{, December 19, in the school auditorium. Shaw generally takes an historic l>ackl{romHl for his plays. In th is <:ase he ha s chosen the old legend of ··Androclcs and the Lion," and in dramatizing it, as he ~oes.;in so _many of his plays, he has msertcd bits of the ridiculous amid the sublime. The myth from which Shaw has taken his plot for this play tells of how one man's love for animals saves a numhcr of Christians who have been thrown to the lions in the drama for the amu~ement of the sensuous natures of the Roman people. It is not a play of plot, but rather one of situations and persona lities. ~haw has pictureu the various types of the early Christians very vivid ly in some of those characters. He shows the different kinds ranging from the h lackguar<.lly debauchee, who, through fear of the hereafter. turns Christian, to the oue who has the clearest vision and mo~t perfect conception-Androcles.
