New Trier Showing Fails to Warm Fans By DAVE SCHULTY The most excitement for chilled New Trier East fans Saturday came at halftime when the dads of junior and senior players put on a game of touch football. The score of that contest was measured in post-game groans and moans over sore muscles. Several of the Indian varsity players also suffered from the same problem, but it was mainly their pride that was hurt as Waukegan stopped New Trier in its tracks 21-0 on a windy day in Winnetka. What a difference a week makes might be the theme of the game. One of the New Trier assistants came into the locker room after the contest and said, "Last week he completed 19 passes . . . today it was one." Didn't Match Performance His recall was faulty, but lanky quarterback Tom Bieneman did not have a good day. He completed only six of 17 for 61 yards, and the ones that missed were generally by wide margins. Although he had six passes intercepted the week before, Bieneman put on an inspired performance against a tough Evanston eleven in completing 15 of 27. "I don't think the wind was much of a factor," said coach Ed Heikkinen. "Tom throws the ball hard. He just had a bad day." The offense for the Trevians was practically non-existent. New Trier picked up 14 yards rushing in the contest. At halftime, the figure on the ground was minus 7. Waukegan accomplished the trick with a rugged line and a determined Ohio-State type of threeyards-and-a-cloud-of-dust offense, Only Saturday the dust looked more like wet dirt. The Bulldogs controlled the ball so effectively that New Trier ran only four plays in the fourth period. New Trier's line also was equal SPORTS to the task, especially linebackers Bill Hoch and Rich McFadzean along with co-captain Dick Williamson up front. Grind It Out Waukegan gained 104 yards rushing, but it took 46 plays for an average of barely over two yards a carry. However, a couple of breaks and a tremendous pass reception in the second period gave Waukegan its first two touchdowns. End Bob Hovey blocked a punt by Bieneman early in the second quarter and by the time the ball stopping rolling behind the New Trier quarterback, Waukegan took over on the Trevian 32. Six plays later, from the 15, lefthanded quarterback Tim Labus threw a pass down the right side to halfback Wayne Walker. It bounced off his hands, off those of a New Trier defender, and into the arms of end Steve Drew, who was tackled on the one. It took two plays for 195-pound fullback Joel Hall to plow into the end zone. Later in the period, Waukegan sent in reserve quarterback Doug Hakanen at halfback and he threw a 32-yard scoring pass to Hovey, who leaped to catch the ball between two New Trier players at the 3, and walked into the end zone. "That was the best line we've seen so far, both on offense and defense," said Heikkinen. "They're the best team in the league." The standings, however, still show Evanston on top with a 4-0 record while Waukegan is tied with Oak Park in second at 3-1. New Trier is 1-3 in Suburban ? Jk&h · ... League play and 1-4 overall. The Indians travel to Maywood Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest with Proviso East. Proviso Up and Down "Proviso is a very unpredictable team," said Heikkinen. "They'll play a little more wide-open game then Waukegan." Proviso lost by a surprisingly-big margin to Morton East in its league opener 40-14, but came back the next week to smash Highland Park 45-12. Then the Pirates were beaten 17-3 by Oak Park before topping Niles East 20-6 on Saturday. Bieneman was not the only New Trier player to experience problems against Waukegan. McFadzean, New Trier's most dependable performer in the backfield, fumbled the ball on the first Indian play from scrimmage. Jerry Gelling recovered for Waukegan on the New Trier 29, but the Trevian defense held. Hall picked up Waukegan's final touchdown late in the fourth period on another one-yard plunge. The Bulldogs added insult to injury with an onside kickoff that they recovered. As a result, New Trier ran the first play in the fourth quarter and never saw the ball again until the last 30 seconds. (Milton Merner Photo) Hold Off Glenbrook North JVs Cowboys Strike Early for 13-0 Win By ERIK STOTTRUP New Trier West's youthful Cowboys rambled for two touchdowns and then held off a flurry of late Glenbrook North junior varsity passes for a 13-0 football win Saturday. The West squad saw from the start that the muddy field would make passing useless, and instead ground out 217 yards and 10 first downs. After marching 45 yards in the first period only to falter on the Glenbrook 10-yard line, West's Cowboys barged across the goal line for six points in the second quarter and added ..jseven more early in the third. 26 Second-quarter heroics were turned in by halfback Jim Miller, who scampered 18 yards to North's goal line with just seven seconds left. The score climaxed a drive of 45 yards in six plays, with Miller carrying the ball five times and accounting for 43 of the yards. A Cross-Wind Helps A sharp cross-wind set up New Trier's final tally. A Spartan punt from inside their five-yard line carried only to the 27. After Miller and halfback Tom Langston combined to move the ball to the 3, Langston fought his way across. Miller carried the ball over for the extra point and ended the scoring for the afternoon. The Cowboys almost scored again when they recovered their own kickoff on the Spartans' 39. After 10 plays and the end of the third period, New Trier held the ball on Glenbrook's eight-yard line. Miller moved the ball to the 6 and a first down to open the last quarter, but the Spartan defense rebuffed three more carries, and Cowboy quarterback Tony Ebersole passed incomplete. The Spartans March A determined Spartan offense then took over and, sparked by a 27-yard pass play, marched 80 yards to the Cowboys' 14 before faltering. Quarterback Bob Wall hit Rob Martini at midfield, and he scampered to the Cowboys' 40. Eight plays later another pass intended for Martini resulted in an interference call against New Trier West and a first down for Glenbrook. Martini carried the ball to the 14 before the New Trier defense stiffened. Wall dropped back to pass and was downed on the 19. Seconds later a Spartan halfback made a driving try for last-down toss in the end zone. Hope From a Fumble Spartan hopes remained alive when a New Trier fumble was recovered seconds later on the (Continued on page 30) L. w.
