PUBLIC FORUM Deplores Lack of Meetings On Controversial Amendment WILMETTE--Monday n i g h t ' s public debate between attorneys Elroy Sandquist J r . and Emerson Chandler provided an interesting exchange of ideas on the proposed revenue article amendment. Several attending asked questions and demonstrated considerable interest in the controversial proposal. Undoubtedly, many other North Shore voters share such interest but are uncertain regarding the proposal's exact nature and the advisability of voting for such. This uncertainty is increased by the continuous failure of all six 1st District legislative candidates, all incumbents seeking re-election, to make any genuine attempt to educate 1st District voters on the true nature of the all-important legislature-created proposal. As an unsuccessful "reform" legislative candidate in the June 14 primary, I am appalled by the callous indifference to such obligation currently manifested by the joint failure of such legislators to co-sponsor even one such meeting. I therefore call upon Sen. Arrington and Reps. Dawson, Johnston, Katz, Kennedy, and Moran to each immediately co-sponsor one or more public meetings in each 1st District township. Failure to do so would indicate either an inability or unwillingness to meet an important moral responsibility and thereby an unsuitability for legislative office. Our six legislators should either publicly debate the revenue proposal or retire from public life. Robert J. Salberg 126 Woodbine Av. Forum, pointing out the subversive nature of some of these causes, one being "Women for Peace." Quite a bit later, Mrs. Mandel wrote that "Women for Peace" was not brought before the House Committee on Un-American Activities as "a subversive organization," but as individuals in a movement. Mrs. Mandel also brought Cong. Donald Rumsfeld into it by saying, "Incidentally, the House committee is under close scrutiny these days. Many important congressmen-- Donald Rumsfeld among them--are questioning seriously both the efficacy and the true value of this committee." I wrote to Cong. Rumsfeld. Here is his reply: "I specifically did not pass judgment on the House Committee on Un-American Activities. As a matter of fact, I have supported the committee and have consistently voted for the appropriations for the committee since my election to Congress in 1962." Further research into Communist literature ("Political Affairs," March, 1963) showed me that the "movement" nature of "Women for Peace" as opposed to "organization" is intended to confuse. It has been found to be an effective gimmick in preventing investigation of the "brains" of these suspect movements. Mrs. John F. Lundin 2231 Kenilworth Av. Local Marine Hurt in Action A 19-year-old Wilmette Marine who was seriously wounded in Vietnam last month is recovering in a Honolulu hospital. Lance Cpl. Marshall W. Salvano of 1465 Wilmette Av. suffered wounds on his back, arms, and legs during an early morning patrol Sept. 18 in Quang Tri province, a few miles from North Vietnam. His mother, Mrs. Roland Kehoe, said two U.S. Marine Corps officers who came to visit her reported her son was taking cover during a mortar attack when he was struck the first time. He got up to warn other nearby soldiers of the attack when he was struck again several times, she said. "But they said he will recover all right and come home in about three months," Mrs. Kehoe added. A member of B Company of the First Battalion of the Fifth Marine Division, Cpl. Salvano was participating in "Operation Deckhouse Four" when wounded. He and his company were attempting to flush out Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers infiltrating into South Vietnam. The corporal attended New Trier High School and enlisted in the Marine Corps at the age of 17. WE HAVE TRAVELED THE WORLD TO INCREASE YOUR TRAVEL PLEASURES May we Plan Your Next Trip?
