- The first school fire drills were conducted in Evanston under Mayor James Russell Smart. Both the mayor, and Fire Marshal Carl Harrison were pleased with the results. Statistics of the number of students evacuated and the amount of time this took, were taken at each school. Central School set a record of evacuating 475 students in 54 1/4 seconds. Orrington Avenue School didn't participate in the exercise because its administrators believe the building is fireproof.
