- Police do not whether Mable Mills' (San Antonio, TX) reported loss of $43,000 on Central St. in Evanston, Sat. night, happened. Mon. afternoon, after being hospitalized, Mills left Evanston Hospital. On Mon. Alice K. Ruggles, Superintendent of Evanston Hospital said that Mills was discharged by Dr. C. T. Roome at noon Mon. She left the hospital by a rear door to avoid newspaper reporters. A hospital employee accompanied her to the Union Trust Bank in Chicago. Newspapers reported that Chief of Police Shaffer ordered Ruggles to watch Mills until the incident was cleared up. When questioned by reporters, Ruggles denied having been ordered to guard Mills. Ruggles said Mills left Chicago Mon. night to meet her husband between St. Louis and San Antonio. Ruggles is employing detectives to investigate the case. Mrs. H. L. Stevens, at whose home Mills visited Sat. night before the alleged loss of money, stated Tues. that she had no information about Mills' departure.
