Full Text

Enlisting with the 51st Indiana volunteers in the War between the States, he fought at the battles at Shiloh, Chickcamauga, Stone River, and Lookout Mountain, and was with Sherman's troops in the march through Georgia. In all, he spent four years and two months in the federal service. After the war he returned to Indiana, and, from his savings purchased a horse and buggy which he later traded for 80 acres of Iowa farm land. For the past 20 years he had made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Lenoir Hood Miller, in Wilmette. Last year he attended the ceremonies connected with the 75th anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg. He would have been 97 years old in June. The memorial services were attended by members of the George H. Thomas post of the Grand Army of the Republic of which he was a member. The ashes were placed in the family lot at Glidden, Iowa. Two sons, G.T. Hood of Chicago and Guy W. Hood of South Bend, 14 grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren also survive. Mr. Hood, active until a short time ago, was a familiar figure at Wilmette Memorial Day ceremonies
