Dennis R. Callaghan, the former Wilmette Golf Club manager charged with the theft of more than $10,000 in Wilmette Park District money, appeared last week in Cook County Circuit Court, where his attorney asked for a speedy trial.

Callaghan entered no plea, and Judge Larry Axelrood set July 22 as the next date for a preliminary hearing in the case.

The complaint against Callaghan, a Northbrook resident who was formerly the Professional Golf Association professional as well as golf club manager for the Park District, alleges that he took more than $10,000 from the district, in a period between January 2009 and August 2010, when he resigned his position.

Wilmette police arrested Callaghan on June 2, and charged him with felony theft the following day.

Defense attorney Frank DiFranco, said after the June 8 hearing that the charges were vague, and that Callaghan is “looking forward to his day in court.”
